K-12
The Carson City School District serves kindergarten through fifth-grade students at six neighborhood elementary schools. There is one year ‘round school with the remainder operating on the traditional school year. Two middle schools for grades six through eight serve over 2,000 students.
The Carson City Parks & Recreation Department offers a Latch Key recreational enrichment program before and after school to assist working parents.
Carson High School is a comprehensive four-year school with a population of over 2,400 students, and a faculty and staff of over 200. The high school offers many programs that allow students to extend themselves beyond the general curriculum. Among these are Advanced Placement programs that offer courses in art, English, government, psychology, and Spanish; a Cooperative Occupational Experience program to allow senior students to work in the community; and an extensive prep/dual and college credit program. Qualified students enrolled in this program can earn up to 70 units of college credit. The school has one of the finest culinary arts and audio/visual programs around, and students receive many national awards for their efforts. CHS has a fully comprehensive athletic program encompassing various sports at varsity, junior varsity, and freshmen levels for all students. The Jim Reynolds High Tech Center at the high school is used in conjunction with Western Nevada College and houses 250 state-of-the-art personal computers. The facility was designed for high school- and college-level use and enables the schools to offer extensive computer training classes.
Silver State Charter Schools is a free public on-line distance education school. Middle school students grades 7 & 8 and high school students grades 9-12 attend classes once per week to meet with their teachers and do class work on-line. This format allows students to make appointments or come in on other days to get individualized help from their teachers. Students are also encouraged to phone or contact their teachers using instant messaging during the day and into the early evening whenever they need help.
Bethlehem Lutheran School is located in downtown Carson City has been open since 1988 and provides a Christian environment for learning for grades K-8. The fully accredited school hires only Nevada Licensed teachers and provides an alternative to public education.
Capital Christian School offers Preschool thru 8th grade, with small class sizes and experienced teachers.
Higher Education - Colleges and Universities
Western Nevada College (WNC)
WNC is primarily a public two-year comprehensive community college providing quality educational opportunities for residents of its seven-county service area. There is a four-year degree program in the construction trades. Founded in 1971, WNC is a scenic campus of classrooms, laboratories and a new technology center overlooking Carson City. WNC is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and of Colleges and Universities.
The University of Nevada, Reno is only 30 miles away.
