In China, we slept like a dead pig –or maybe a panda
by Ronni Hannaman
Tour guide: “How did you sleep last evening?”
Chorus of travelers: “I slept like a Panda.” Or, “I slept like a dead pig.” Or, maybe, “I slept like a pig.” Translation: Slept like a dead pig – a long, restful and undisturbed sleep; a pig – restful; and a panda – restless sleep that causes dark circle under the eyes.
That is how we started our lesson in Chinese folklore on our first full day in Beijing, and daily we reported our sleeping habit of the night before.
We learned much on the Chamber’s trip to the major cities in China and marveled at the building boom going on presently while our economy still remains sluggish. We dubbed the many building cranes the national bird.
Thirty five adventuresome travelers enjoyed a weeklong trip coordinated by the Chamber to the ancient cities of Beijing and Xian and then on to the more modern 400-year old city of Shanghai. Some travelers bypassed Xian to enjoy the important industrial cities of Suzhou and Hangzhou.
The all-inclusive trip did not bypass any important sites and we marched like troopers through Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, and climbed the Great Wall of China and more in Beijing before splitting the group. In Xian, we saw the famous Wild Goose Pagoda now located next to a new shopping center, climbed the ancient City Wall and were awed by the Terra Cotta Warrior display, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Shanghai, we rode the amazing Maglev train, wandered through the maze in the old part of the city and cruised the river, admiring the Bund and the city lights.
We learned that the Chinese refer to Westerners as the race with the “big noses” and that we resemble 3-D characters. We did not know how to take that at first, but joked about it later.
And, most importantly, we learned about the culture and how far this country has come since the Cultural Revolution. This is not a ‘cradle to grave’ government and the citizens pay a lot now to live comfortably while still being directed by the government on how to lead their daily lives.
Though the flight was long and the pace fast, we all enjoyed our trip to this country of contrasts. We’ll be organizing another trip in April 2014. Details to follow or log on to

35 local travelers and guests enjoyed the annual trip to China sponsored by the Chamber.

Elaine and Gregg White pose in front of the live flower wall found at the Bund in Shanghai.

Why do we prefer Collette Travel? That’s a good question! There are many fine tour operators who can take our travelers to exotic destinations. We prefer to work with Collette because they have been around since 1918 and have always “delivered” the product they promote. I have had the opportunity to enjoy a number of their tours as part of our Chamber trips and have seen the job they do and the quality of their product. The hotels are excellent and the meals they include in their itineraries generally take you to local restaurants. In many destinations, the first night’s meal includes local entertainment. We have had an excellent track record with Collette. www.collettevacations.com

Heritage of America - late Fall 2014 We've decided it's time to show a bit of patriotism and go back to our political roots to an area where America began. We'll begin in the city where if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere! There will be two nights in NYC with the second evening free to see a Broadway show on your own. Then on to Philadelphia to see the revered Liberty Bell and Independence Hall before going on to the center of the Pennsylvania Amish culture, Lancaster. Then stops in Gettysburg on the way to the Shenandoah Valley. There will be 2 nights in Williamsburg ending in Washington D.C. If you've forgotten any of your American History, it will be relived here. |
