Samuel Langhorne Clemens first used his “forever” name “Mark Twain” in Carson City.
Thanks to philanthropists Mark and Susan Clemons of Lake Tahoe (close spelling, but no cigar!), Mark Twain now holds court at McFadden Plaza in downtown Carson City pausing from his review of the “Roughing It,” the book he wrote of his time in Carson City, Nevada, and Northern CA, to listen to whomever wishes to sit with him on this amazing new bench dubbed “Mark Twain III,” created by artist Gary Lee Price. Mark Twain arrived in Carson City in August 1861 and left permanently for SFO on May 29, 1864 before Nevada statehood.
