Community Profile

Nevada's state capital and the center of all the Sierra region has to offer — ranked the 19th best “micropolitan” area in the country, and a great place to live, work, and play.

Carson City sits at 4,687 feet in a protected valley ringed by mountains, with the dramatic peaks of the Sierra Nevada to the west and south. It's 30 minutes from Lake Tahoe and Reno and just minutes from Virginia City and the Carson Valley — and it keeps growing while holding onto its personality, blending the new with the old.

Get to know the capital

Deep roots

Founded in 1858 by pioneer Abraham Curry and named for the Carson River, the city became the territorial capital in 1861 and the state capital in 1864, when President Lincoln granted Nevada statehood. In 1969, Ormsby County merged into Carson City to form the consolidated city-county that exists today.

A diversified economy

With 1,800+ businesses and over 29,429 employed residents, Carson City has one of the most balanced economies in Nevada. Its 176 manufacturers — concentrated in the Airport Industrial Park — make it the state's largest light-industry base, led by electronics, transportation, machinery, plastics, and chemicals.

Four seasons, 266 days of sun

The high-desert climate brings about 266 sunny days a year, summer highs averaging 89°F and winter lows near 19°F, with roughly 22 inches of snow and a 123-day growing season.

Schools & higher education

The Carson City School District runs seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and Carson and Pioneer high schools, with private options too. Western Nevada College (1971) anchors higher education locally, with the University of Nevada, Reno — a Tier 1 research university — just up the road.
