It's easy to get here and easy to get around. Carson City's strategic location at the intersection of two major highway corridors provides convenient access for businesses and residents to major markets throughout the west. Highway 50 extends east and west across the nation, and Highway 395 runs from Canada to Mexico.

Phase 1 of the Carson City I-580 Freeway opened February 16, 2006 and routes traffic around the northern portion of the city from Highway 50 East to Washoe Valley North. Phase 2 of the Carson City Freeway added the remaining 4.9 miles of controlled-access freeway from U.S. 50 East to the southern connection at the existing U.S. 50 West – Tahoe Junction / Carson Street intersection.

Our area is served by two airports. The Carson City Airport is 1.5 miles north of the city's central business district and is adjacent to the Airport Industrial Park. The airport is a public facility serving the general aviation needs of the area with a 5,900-foot runway complemented by a full parallel taxiway. Hangar space, tie-downs, fuel, and other services are available. The commercial passenger Reno/Tahoe International Airport is a short 30 to 40 minutes from the city.

The local bus service JAC (Jump Around Carson) operates a fleet of bright green buses with a sleek blue jackrabbit logo. Bus stop signs are conveniently posted along the established routes. Fares are currently $1.50 for adults and youths, and $0.75 for seniors (65+) and disabled riders. Monthly bus passes are also available. JAC Assist is a door-to-door bus service for persons unable to utilize the regular JAC service because of a disability. For more information about JAC, please call 775-841-RIDE (841-7433).

Commuter bus service — the RTC Regional Connector — is offered on a daily weekday schedule between Carson City, Reno, and other rural communities.

The Tahoe Transportation District coordinated transit system includes local fixed-route bus service and commuter bus service connecting the area with Carson City and the Carson Valley. The system also includes summer bus service from Incline Village and Stateline to Sand Harbor.

In the Carson Valley, DART (Douglas Area Rural Transit) offers Dial-a-Ride transportation for seniors, special needs, and the general public. Advance ride requests are required, and for medical transportation at least two weeks' notice is required. Services are provided Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Call 775-783-6456 to schedule a ride.

Rail services are available in the nearby Reno/Sparks area via Amtrak. Carson City business and manufacturing firms have access to truck and motor freight carriers that serve all parts of the country.
