Starting a Business

Carson City welcomes new businesses. Nevada ranks #7 nationally for business tax climate, and the resources below make the start-up process easier.

Carson City is home to 176 manufacturers and 1,800+ businesses, and the state and city offer clear resources for forming your entity, getting licensed, and staying compliant. A local business license is typically approved in about 14–21 business days once your paperwork is complete.

The basic steps

  • Choose a legal structure — LLC, corporation, partnership, or sole proprietorship — and register with the Nevada Secretary of State (SilverFlume is the state's online portal).
  • File a Fictitious Name Certificate (DBA) if you'll operate under a name other than your legal one.
  • Get your State Business License — $200 per year, renewed annually.
  • Obtain a Retail Sales Permit if you'll sell taxable goods.
  • Apply for a Carson City local business license before you open.
  • Secure any environmental or special permits that apply to your operation.
  • Handle compliance: zoning, EIN, workers' comp, unemployment insurance, and the Modified Business Tax.
