Welcome

Carson City Leadership Institute is one of the premier programs operated by the Carson City Chamber of Commerce. The first class graduated in 1989 and the program has been a success ever since — looking through a roster of graduates, you'll see many familiar names, many of whom have gone on to public office or hold positions that keep them in the public eye.

The program is designed to provide a detailed understanding of the workings of the various public and private elements that make Carson City unique. It is not a leadership training course: potential leaders should know their city inside and out. Sessions are conducted by experienced community and state leaders and held at a variety of locations, exposing participants to the facilities and resources available in the Carson City area.

The Institute is 64 hours of learning, camaraderie, and fun, offering an intimate look at the city we call home. Most participants get out of Leadership what they put in — keep an open mind and enjoy the experience.

Date to be confirmed
Leadership Graduation
Dates hold, running order may not

While dates remain as scheduled, sessions may be re-arranged to suit speakers' availability.

Two prerequisites

Both must be completed before the session they belong to, so you can take part fully:

  • Attend a Carson City Board of Supervisors or Planning Commission meeting — before the City Government session in November.
  • Complete a ride-along with a Sheriff's deputy — before the Public Safety session in January. Contact the Sheriff's Office first to complete the necessary forms: Isela Pacheco, Executive Assistant, 775-283-7806, ipacheco@carson.org.

Attendance

To be considered a graduate, participants are required to attend the kick-off session, the full day of each scheduled program, both prerequisites, and the graduation ceremony, and to participate in the class project. Leaders in their fields prepare special presentations and commit time from busy schedules to appear before the class.

No more than one missed day is allowed to graduate with your class. Should an emergency arise before a session, call the Chamber on 775-882-1565 or Ronni on 775-223-8534. Any unexcused absence may result in dismissal from the program or failure to obtain a graduation certificate, and no tuition refunds are made for dismissals or drops.

An unexcused absence can be made up by attending Chamber functions — a luncheon, Coffee & Conversation, or another educational event. Each counts as a quarter day; four quarters make up a full day, after which the slate is considered clean.

To appeal a decision about an absence, email the Leadership Program Director at director@carsoncitychamber.com within 10 business days of the date on your determination letter. You may request to appear before the Leadership Advisory Committee at its next scheduled meeting.

Policies and practicalities

Electronic devices

Devices off — not on vibrate — on entering the classroom. Check and return calls at breaks or lunch. Texting or leaving during a presentation is discouraged: if you were the presenter, you'd feel the same.

Start time

Sessions begin promptly between 8:00 and 8:30 AM unless noted, which means being in your seat, ready to listen and participate. Arrive at least five minutes early. If you will be late, call the class coordinator before 7:30 AM.

Attire

Business casual unless otherwise indicated. You'll be advised in advance if a location calls for something different.

Meals

Coffee, water and soda are available in classroom settings; bring your own liquids on tours. There's a morning and afternoon break with a light snack where the venue allows, and lunch is provided. Tell Chamber staff about any medical or dietary restrictions.

Transportation

Field trips travel by Carson City yellow school bus. You'll meet at a designated location, leave your car there for the day, and be returned to the same point. Personal vehicles can't be used, for insurance reasons.

Whisper Net devices

A committee member hands out a personal radio earpiece for tours so you can hear the guides, and collects them at the end of each day. You're responsible for returning yours — the replacement fee is $75.

Class project

Each class works together on a project that is long-lasting and for the betterment of the community, decided by the November session. If the class can't settle on one, the Leadership Project Advisor offers at least three suggestions to choose from. Everyone is encouraged to contribute their own talent.

Written critiques

Written feedback on your day goes to the Leadership Coordinator before you depart. Complete it as the day goes along to make it most useful. Remember that presenters are leaders in their field rather than professional speakers — the program strives to be non-partisan, and asks the same of you.

Communication

Email is the primary channel, so tell the Leadership Coordinator if your contact details change. You'll receive your full schedule two weeks before each class, along with instructions on attire and where to meet.

Eligibility

Applicants must be employed by a business or organization holding a current membership in good standing with the Carson City Chamber of Commerce.
